Congratulations to Bente Stachowske, a freelance photographer based in Hamburg, Germany who picked up the grand prize at last night’s exhibition launch held at theprintspace.
Bente’s work Living On The Anchor documents the lives of the anchor-outs, a community of people who live off-shore on the watery edge of Sausalito, a San Francisco city where some of the richest people of the American society reside. “Of the more or less 100 people who lie at anchor and live in Richardson, only a few are depicted. Some residents of Sausalito welcome the anchor-outs as neighbours, many merely tolerate them and still others are bothered by them. They think of the anchor-outs as a threat and even call them freeloaders and thieves. This is why the anchor-outs community constantly worries about losing its independence.” – Bente Stachowske, Living On The Anchor
This quarter’s competition theme was ‘Stories of Community’ and was judged by a panel of respected photographic experts, which includes acclaimed photographer Ben Hopper, founder of the Miniclick Photo Talks Jim Stephenson, and curator/photographer Stuart Pilkington.

Tom Elkins, CEO of PhotoVoice, said: “As with each of the previous competitions, we’ve been amazed at the quality of the submissions and the compelling stories they tell. Selecting a shortlist wasn’t an easy task for the judges, but the work from the six finalists offers a coherent collection which really highlights the theme of ‘Stories of Community’. Congratulations to all of them, and in particular Bente for her success.“
