How can I get involved with PhotoVoice?
Unfortunately, we don’t have any current vacancies for volunteers or interns. If an opening arises, it will be advertised on our website, in our newsletter and on social media.
We run regular guest blogs on our website that focus on photography for social change and are interested to hear from photographers running participatory projects. If you have a project that you would like to feature, please do get in touch.
Becoming a ‘PhotoVoice’ member provides a range of benefits including a quarterly publication, discounted printing from metro imaging, discounted use of darkroom hire and film processing at Photofusion. It also entitles you to enter regular photography competitions, held in conjunction with theprintspace.
Join PhotoVoice’s acclaimed three-day training – a public training programme for practitioners who would like to learn more about the practicalities and ethics in running participatory photography projects. Drawing upon our expertise gained from running participatory projects with excluded communities around the world, we run a public training programme for practitioners who would like to learn more about the practicalities and ethics in running participatory photography projects.
Sign up to our newsletter and receive regular updates on all of the above!
Can I work as a facilitator on a PhotoVoice project?
We do not generally work with facilitators on a freelance basis. If an opportunity arises, then we will contact practitioners who have undertaken our three-day training course.
Can I set up a project with PhotoVoice?
PhotoVoice is a small charity and we have to find the funds to support every project we run. We always work in partnership with organisations specializing in a particular field rather than individual photographers. If your organization has available funds and is interested in setting up a project, please get in touch.
Can I use the term ‘PhotoVoice’ in my project or research?
There is a difference between photovoice as a methodology and PhotoVoice (capital ‘P’, capital ‘V’), the organisation. Photovoice (the methodology) is a participatory action research method. At PhotoVoice we use that methodology to promote positive social change through photography. People can and do develop projects using photovoice methodology without reference to us, but the use of PhotoVoice as the name of an organisation is trademarked.

Do you run training workshops in the USA?
Unfortunately, we do not currently run any training programs in the States. This is something we are considering in the longer term. Many US and Canadian citizens come over and do our training here in London, often finding help with costs through their university or organisation.
I want to run a special training. What does a bespoke training programme look like?
We can provide a three-day bespoke training course, tailored to meet your requirements, roughly divided as follows:
Day 1 – visual literacy and image dialogue, uses of participatory photography, representation and empowerment
Day 2 – workshop planning and design including recruitment, the role of the facilitator, risk, creating safe programmes
Day 3 – working with text, ethical and informed consent, outputs and subsequent activities with participant work, and advocacy/campaigning
We provide all cameras and relevant course materials for the duration of the training.
We are grateful to receive donated digital cameras. It would need to be 12MP or over and in good working order. Please send them to our offices, at: 14.5 Market Row, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, London. SW9 8LA
