The use of imagery within the UK charity sector and by overseas NGOs is often controversial. PhotoVoice’s ethical approach – resulting in images like Jean’s above – is largely unique in the sector. We work with our beneficiaries to put across their point of view, their messages.
We think it important that disadvantaged and under-represented groups have a say in how they’re portrayed.
“This project has given me more than anyone would ever know. The whole experience of making images that represent me has been great. I have had my confidence really knocked and have felt very low. This project has helped me to trust my worker more and has helped me to stand up for myself too – to believe in myself.”

Between now and noon on 5 December, PhotoVoice has an incredible opportunity to have your donation matched through the Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s biggest online matched funding campaign.
Your donation will support our campaign ‘Is That Image Ethical?’ and help us run more projects like Having Our Say, which is supporting young people affected by or at risk of sexual exploitation.
